Save Money By Changing Your Diet

Frugal Living Tip of the Month: How Much Can You Save? $80+ per Month

Making It Work:

We all are looking for ways we can consistently save money. And for many, wanting to eat healthier is an important goal. Great news! You can save money and eat more nutritiously, simply by changing your diet!

Check out these quick ways to beef up your bank account while eating a healthy diet:

➡  Eat just one meal with meat per day. The money you’ll save on meat will add up.

➡  Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Even though fresh produce can at times be pricey, vow to shop for in-season produce and sales on fresh items to cut costs.

➡  Shop smart at farmers’ markets. Buying fresh produce at your local farmers’ market is even better in terms of saving money.

➡  Consider cutting your meat portions (and expenditures) by 1/3. If you can’t give up meat for lunch or dinner, then reduce your meat portion size to 2/3 the size you would normally eat.

➡  Cut down buying processed foods like noodles, canned soups, and chips. These foods are expensive. Plus, they tend to contain quite a few unhealthy substances and preservatives, including sodium, corn syrup, added sugars, and starches. If possible, leave them out of your diet. Pocket the savings, instead, and preserve your good health.

➡  Increase fiber intake and save: buy brown rice by the bag. When packaged in large amounts, brown rice tends to be more economical. Plus, rice is a source of good, healthy, filling fiber.

➡  Compare costs as you read bread labels. Find a couple of lower-cost brands of breads that are 100% whole wheat, contain no corn syrup and very little sugar, and then stick with those brands. It will take some time to read labels at first, but ultimately, you’ll hang on to your dough while avoiding excessive unhealthy ingredients.

➡  Avoid pre-packaged snack foods for big savings. Instead, eat plant-based foods like fruits—bananas, apples, pears, or peaches between meals. You can also eat fresh vegetables, like baby carrots, celery with peanut butter, or cauliflower florets. Pre-packaged snack foods cost $3 to $5 (or more) and usually aren’t very healthy.

Changing your diet by following these tips will not only save you money, but it will also vastly improve your health. Why not accomplish both goals, beginning today?
